SEASON 2008 SO FAR

Kingsway Olympic (A)

L 5-1

Dominant performance from Kingsway from start to finish, only highlight a superb finish from Craig Dunbar.

Floreat Athena (H)

L 1-2

Poor game in which Floreat seized upon defensive errors to grab 3 points whilst Black & Greens rued several missed opportunities

Curtin University (A)

L 4-1

Dismal showing from Balga as they slumped to bottom of the league with this comprehensive defeat.

Forrestfield United (H)

L 0-3

In a game against fellow strugglers Forrie, Balga were outfought in a spell either side of half time to record another defeat

Kwinana United (A)

L 3-2

Heartbreaking result for the boys, leading 2-0 & cruising in the second half they somehow managed to concede 3 late goals to lose a game they deserved plenty from. Several shots cleared off the line also in the second half that would have wrapped up the points, Kwinana threw caution to the wind & the gamble paid off when in the last minute a cross from near the corner flag drifted in at the far post to seal a stunning victory.

Fremantle Croatia (H)

W 3-2

Sparkling performance against the clear league leaders who up to this point were unbeaten. Despite conceding an early goal, Balga dominated & a fantastic early spell in the second half saw 3 well crafted goals. Fremantle then lifted markedly & caused several scares but could only salvage a late consolation as Balga secured their first 3 points of the season.

North Perth United (A)

L 3-0

Balga never at the races in this one as a hard working, strong tackling North Perth side capitalised on an under strength Balga side who failed to re-capture the previous weeks showing.

Whitford City (H)

L 2-3

Another encouraging performance & this could have gone either way. Featuring Paul Harnett who was a last minute call up to don the gloves, the boys tried impressively throughout but in the end lost to a couple of classy finishes.

Ballajura (A)

L 3-2

The 3-2 scoreline haunted Balga again as they surrendered a 2-0 lead once again in the final minutes against a determined Balla side who were heading for defeat only to scrape the win. Once again a few defensive errors cost the side despite some heroic defending early on in the game. This was a game in which Balga proved they could easily match it with the better sides in this division.

International Calcio (H)

W 3-0

A morale boosting performance & in the end a convincing victory over fellow strugglers Calcio. The win meant Balga were no longer bottom of the league & back in the pack seeking survival this season. 2 penalties sealed this one although the result could have been double this.

Fremantle Colo Colo (A)

W 2-3

Second consecutive win as the recovery gained further momentum. A slow start saw Colo snatch an early goal only for an equaliser before half time against the run of play. The second half saw some superb work from Tim Zachariah to help Balga gain a 3-1 lead. Tim’s late injury meant that the boys had to put on a backs to the wall defensive performance to close out the win. Colo grabbed a late goal as the scoreline again finished 3-2.

The reserves season so far has been inconsistent at best, & despite being the better side in most, if not all games they have struggled to put good results together. At the half way point in the league the reserves are sitting in mid table. Coach Nick Sutton & Laurent Merle will be looking for improvement over the second half of the season.

BALGA CONTINUE WINNING START

Balga have maintained their 100% start to season 2007 with further home wins over Kwinana Utd and then Belmont Villa. The reserves also continued their hot streak by winning both their games also.

Going into the match against Kwinana with two wins and a healthy goal difference it wasn’t expected that they would encounter any problems against the side from the southern suburbs who sat rock bottom of the table. Despite this it was Kwinana who dominated early with several near misses before Balga grabbed a couple of goals on the counter attack. The down side for the home side was a missed penalty and some complacency creeping in. Early in the second half some slack defending saw Chris Atkins grab a goal for the red and whites but after some more nervous moments Tim slotted a penalty and a 4th goal was added not long after. In the dying seconds another Atkins header allowed Kwinana a second to leave the scoreline at 4-2.

The game against Belmont Villa which over the last few years has been keenly contested and hard fought was again shaping up as a crucial fixture although unlike in recent seasons this was a top of the table clash. Belmont entered the game unbeaten and scoring freely, whilst the mighty Black and Greens were looking to register a 4th consecutive win. After a cagey start Balga soon encountered major problems as their inspirational captain limped off with what appeared initially to be a serious ankle injury. Jock dropped into the defence and after a restructure of the side it looked like Belmont had settled the quicker and dominated possession and passing. As the half wore on though the twin Tiago’s began to exert an influence taking on the Belmont defence which seemed wobbly under pressure. After several near misses Tiago Lufthunsa finally broke the deadlock with a super overhead kick to flash the ball into the top of the net. From this point Belmont had lost the initiative and retreated deep into their own half having little of the ball. Tiago added a second within minutes, a long range effort which sneaked through a crowded box and crept into the corner of the goals past a goalie rooted to the spot. Zoran enhanced his blooming reputation with another bomb from distance which deflected off a defender and into the net as Balga came off at half time buoyant.

The second half saw some further quality football from Balga with several interchanges deserving better until Scott Wilson took aim from 35 yards and lobbed the keeper to make it 4-0. The only worries for coach Glynn Shaw at this stage would have been the ankle injury to Anthony Banham which would see him miss the next month and the late send off of Gary Shorto for abusive language.

The reserves also won 4-0 indicating that even with a depleted side several could step up to fill the gaps.

23/4/2007

COLO COLO VS BALGA

Balga continued their excellent start to the season with a convincing win over Colo Colo at Fremantle Park. The reserves won 7-2 despite failing to produce some of the attacking link up play evident against BB United last week, and also missed several more chances to blow the game apart. The game was also marred by some rash tackling from the home side as they struggled to match their faster opponents. 2 from 2 for the reserves thus far with a +14 goal difference and lots of improvement to come mean the signs are good.

In the first team game a much tighter contest was expected given that both sides had wins last week, Colo Colo beating Kwinana away 4-1. They certainly seemed confident and started well after Corey Herrington in goals was penalised for picking up a backpass which seemed more a clearance gone wrong. Still Colo Colo had no qualms in dispatching the ball home from the resulting free kick to take the lead. Only minutes later the lead was doubled as a long ball over the top of the Balga rearguard was met with a flicked header which in the greasy conditions skidded past the goalie and into the corner of the goals. At this stage Colo Colo dominated possession and were looking very dangerous but gradually the Balga midfield and wide players began to attack the opposition causing headaches for Colo Colo. After several near misses Tiago Duque or ‘Maverick’ as he is known as pounced and crashed a shot from 30 yards low past a stranded keeper to open the game up. The heavens had opened and a torrential downpour erupted meaning both teams struggled to play crisp passing football and long range shots were near on impossible for the goalies. The tide had turned by now and Tim up front Zoran, Dale and Jock in midfield were thrusting forward at every opportunity as Colo Colo were battling to get the ball out of their own half. A set piece brought the equaliser as a sublime free kick from Tim flew into the top corner from 20 yards for 2-2. It was a goal that would have graced any football ground in the country.

Half time the scores were level but Balga were in the ascendancy which continued for the second half as Duque put a free kick over the keeper for his second of the game followed by a flicked header from Gary Shorto which looped into the net to make the score 4-2. several more chances were wasted or saved by a combination of woodwork, defender or keeper before Colo Colo snatched a goal on the breakaway to make it 4-3, capitalising on a rare mistake at the back. Despite this Balga scored a fifth late on to make the points safe.

MESSAGE FROM OUR SENIOR COACH

Congratulations and well done to all players and club officials following last Sundays commencement of the 2007 season which saw the club off to a flying start winning in all grades including the first team winning 4-2 (Balga in 3rd place in the league ladder) and the ressies winning 9-0 (score could have been double) against BB United.

I ask everyone in the club, players and officials alike, to remember that in order to maintain these winning ways there are probably five attitudes of champions in every profession including Football and these five attitudes would be prominent in the mindset of the peak performer:

1). Paying the Price Everyone wants to win, but few are willing to invest the time and effort. Paying the price means focusing on developing the skills and training regimen of champions – observation, imitation, repetition and the internalization of knowledge into habits; also, learning why and how to go the extra mile and seeing success as a marathon, not a dash. Champions view failures as temporary inconveniences and learning experiences.

2). The Champion Within Winners believe in their worth in advance of their performance. Most people base their worth on their current status or achievement level, which means that until they are judged successful by society’s standards, they have little to be proud of. Champions believe in their dreams when they have only a dream to hang on to, even in the face of criticism and superior achievements by others.

3). Non-situational Integrity Authentic, lasting winners have an uncompromising attitude about self-honesty. They function according to an “integrity triangle”, consisting of three basic questions: (a) Are my beliefs based upon truth? (b) Do my words and actions correspond with truth and honesty? (c) Before I speak or act, do I honestly consider the impact of my decision on other people and the environment?

4). The “Coachability” Factor Champions are always open to alternatives to improve their performance. Consistent winners are not the arrogant egotists who dominate the media spotlight. The most successful individuals in the game of life are often the most approachable, most gracious, non-judgmental with others and most critical of their own performances, as well as most eager to learn and improve.

5). Being a Team Player A team in harmony is synergy in motion, where the whole is greater than the sum of the individual talents. When all assignments are understood, when each takes 100 percent responsibility for the outcome, a quantum leap in performance takes place. Winners learn how to become interdependent, without sacrificing individuality; how to stand out, while fitting in.

Great stuff... remember these five attitudes of a champion and do your bit to ensure a path for a successful 2007 "Football Season" for our club “BALGA” and lets continue our winning way this weekend against Freo Colo-Colo at FREMANTLE PARK, Ellen Street, Fremantle.

Cheers
Glynn Shaw

BALGA LADIES START 2007 IN STYLE

Balga Women's' team started their night series campaign with a good 1-0 victory over a youngish UWA side. The game started in 36degree heat and was played at a good pace in the first half. With just two new faces in the team Balga were showing the more promise and after fifteen minutes newcomer Kitty broke through on the right and managed to get the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. All around the park we had winners and although we were unable to score again we held on for a comfortable victory and look forward to our next match this Friday 9th February at 7:30pm at Coker Park against fellow winners from the first round The Jacks. 2nd December 2006

Dear Friends,

If I have not managed to thank you personally for your support and thoughts over these past few difficult weeks, please accept this huge thank you from all the family. The support has been truly wonderful and has helped us through these times. We are still deeply shocked and bemused by the events however we know that there is much work to be done for Sonyas' family and also the Junior Soccer Club which were two of her big loves. As a family we are strong and will continue to support each other when needed, which is daily it seems.

The Junior Club of course will also continue with the help of those people who were already to come on board. One of Sonyas' biggest thrills was to see the young players arrive at the Club and watch them grow into young adults with the right outlook on life. With this in mind we are setting up the "Sonya Shorto Memorial Trust Fund" this money will be used to improve the players at the Junior Club in many ways. Many people have said to us that if there was anything they could do to help, please let them know. Well this is one real way we can make a difference by donating to this fund. Any amount forwarded however small will be used 100% to help the players at Balga Junior Soccer club. It may be boots that actually fit or a special speaker to address the whole Club or clothes to go to a special interview or some educational course. There are many ways we can help these children improve their self respect and this is what we will try to achieve.

Please be assured that if you are unable to help in this way and would like to assist, be it with some ideas or time, feel free to contact me. We will be setting up a section on the Club website where you will be able to follow the progress of our efforts on Sonyas' behalf. Looking forward to hearing from you.

2006 SEASON SUMMARY

Well season 2006 has come to its conclusion, with some success during the year on & off the park. Congratulations must be extended to Darren McNally & his Under 15’s team who lifted the Championship trophy by defeating Ballajura 3-1 in extra time in the season finale. The team also won the minor premiership with ease.

The seniors completed a miraculous escape over the last 2 months of the season by gaining 10 points in a 5 game stretch to save themselves from relegation to Division 2. Bottom of the league at the half way point in the season, congratulations must also go to coach Glynn Shaw & the squad who lifted themselves out of danger with 2 games in the season remaining. Stirring victories over Morley Windmills, North Perth & rivals Belmont Villa meant that Balga finished outside the bottom 2 for the first time in 4 years. The emergence of several new young players including Trent Singleton & Laze Taneski, combined with the experience of old hands Nick Sutton, Glynn Atkinson & Anthony Banham enabled the side to steer out of danger.

One of the highlights of the second half of the season was the teams ability to fight back from behind with a never say die attitude. Perhaps this was the difference from previous seasons as a hallmark of their latter results was that the boys kept attacking & grinding out results despite being a goal or two behind. Against Morley Balga found themselves down 2 nil early on in the game but slowly but surely managed to grind the Windmills side down, through fitness, skills & sheer persistence. After getting a goal back late in the first half the tide began to turn & the second half was spent camped in Windmills half. Midfield domination, attacking wing play & non stop running never allowed Morley to settle & the equaliser came midway through the half before a stunning freekick in the last minute by Steve Hill pulled off a remarkable comeback.

From this result the team gathered a lot of belief & a week later travelled to North Perth with their tails up. Injuries to Steve Hill amongst others failed to dull the enthusiasm & although North Perth shot out to another 2 goal lead, just like the week before the side collectively stood tall & fought back to win 4-2. In the end the result could have even been more as North Perth struggled to contain wave after wave of Black & Green pressure.

The next week saw Balga lose to eventual league winners Maccabi 4-1 but again there were signs that the team was coming together as only poor finishing prevented a closer margin against a well drilled side. Confidence wasn’t dented too much as the next week back at Princess Rd Reserve a 1-1 draw with BB United was secured. Although the game failed to hit the heights of previous efforts the ability to grind out a draw gained Balga a vital point.

And so a date with destiny awaited at Gerry Archer Reserve against Belmont Villa. An overcast day greeted the players & conditions could not have been much better for an epic relegation dogfight. Throughout the week the tensions were rising but the players refused to be sidetracked from their aims to secure another invaluable three points which in all likelihood would guarantee safety in the first division. Despite playing an under strength side with injuries to key players like Steve Hill & Mark Colcutt, as well as Craig Chamber unavailable through work commitments, Balga created the better chances & played by far the better football. In the end a 2-0 win to Balga flattered Belmont & the celebrations had begun in earnest!

Although the remaining games saw 2 defeats, to Kingsley 2-3 & then North Beach 1-5, Balga competed in both games & probably should have got at least a draw from the match against Kingsley. In the end the team finished on 16 points & in 10th place, a major improvement on previous years but with a lot of work still to go. Further player personnel & depth is required next season, & although fitness improved in the season’s second half with personal training from Jessica, the hard work needs to start earlier next season. From this base the team can then work on more tactical aspects such as defensive & offensive structures. Glynn Shaw has been re-appointed & with pre-season due to start earlier next season the team can prepare for an assault on a spot in the top half of the table if not higher.

The reserves had an excellent season, leading the league at various stages despite the handicap of having an unsettled side throughout due to a lack of numbers, player movement & injuries. Co- coaches Nick Sutton & Glynn Atkinson managed to mould a resilient side which was defensively sound, with Matt Brown a key player in the midfield & Joseph Lado causing head aches up front & scoring for fun. In the end as numbers tailed off towards the latter stages of the season the results dipped & the side eventually finished in 3rd spot but it was a great achievement to remain the hunt for a title until the final weeks.

In the Vets side it was a disappointing year which seemed to look so positive early on the piece. New arrivals to the team including Nick Giaggostino, John Coulter & Scott Wilson looked likely to spark the team towards the upper end of the table but they never go going. Major injuries early on in the schedule depleted the squads depth & results never improved from this point, although they managed to avoid relegation with vital wins over the cellar dwellers.

The women’s team went through a transitional season this year with mixed results masking the fact that some younger players as well as some more mature newcomers were blooded into playing the world game. Stalwarts Sonya Shorto, Vanessa Mitchell-Anyon, Claire Maddison & Nicole Walker combined well to provide the backbone of the side & mentor new players of which Sharon Stewart & Lisa Lamb were two of the standouts. Next season in a lower division should see the girls show marked improvement in their football & far better results to coincide.

From the junior’s perspective season 2006 has been a mixed year for results & other off field matters. Of course the success of the Under 15’s was the highlight of the season whilst the Under 16’s missed out on a berth in a grand final after succumbing in a penalty shoot out defeat in the semi’s. Unfortunately their behaviour throughout this season dragged the team & the club’s name through the mud with several incidents detracting from their other wise good results.

Elsewhere the juniors again enjoyed a fun season, the World Cup mid season giving the game a boost & hopefully generating increased interest in the game for next year.

Off the field the club’s performance has been steady, but more as with many similar clubs, more help & volunteers are required to help out in a variety of roles to help ensure that the club can run smoothly & progress onto bigger & better stages.

HIGH & LOWS

What went right in 06? The seniors showed much improvement from previous seasons with a good mix of new & old, experienced & newer players. The victory over Morley Windmills was a particular highlight, & Trent Singletons improvement this season bodes well for the future. A gallant performance against Shamrock Rovers in the cup was another highlight as the team realised it could compete against the better sides. The reserves enjoyed an excellent year with several notable scalps along the way. Most teams showed considerable improvement in the seasons second half.

The Under 15’s league & Top 4 win means that the club has a good group of youngsters emerging & hopefully can push into the senior sides in coming years.

The club continues to be committed to improving infrastructure with plans for air conditioning etc still in place to make the faciltities as comfortable as possible.

Apparently Rambo scored a goal this season also, but this is still being disputed by some as to the authenticity of this. Some say Rambo moving to the Vets was something that went right this year anyway.

What went wrong in 06? Off field headlines & publicity for the wrong reasons. Results across several sides were poor. Turnouts to training were disappointing after a healthy start. Key injuries & suspensions through the year also upset many of Balga teams. A lack of volunteers to assist in implementing the ideas & plans that were forecast early on.

Sasa’s astonishing full length dive as he tripped when though on goals against North Beach.

Some of Shane Atkinsons shooting.

WHERE TO FROM HERE?

Glynn Shaw has been re-appointed for next season to continue this years work. More squad depth would be a major help as the team was looking threadbare towards the end. A reserves coach is a must as this season having player/coaches or players getting prepared for the next game is unsatisfactory. More assistance in helping the side prepare for games would also be a big help. Hopefully no more relegation fights next season & a much higher league placing.

The women’s team should develop next season as long as the players return as they’ll have another season of maturation under their belts. The vets? Good luck.

The juniors also look promising provided they receive the right coaching & help. More volunteers/parents helping in this section would be a big help also.

Team sponsorship & speading the word in the community to increase our profile over the next few years is a must, to provide the opportunities to our players.

GERALDTON TRIP

Saturday 11th March 2006

Balga made the long trip to Geraldton to take part in a pre-season game with the Geraldton La Fiamma side. After a lengthy and uncomfortable 5 hour trip the reserves kicked their game off and despite showing some positive signs crashed to a 3-1 defeat. The game was highlighted by a long range strike from Balga’s new centre forward Tiago late in the game to secure a consolation goal.

The first team game commenced with both teams struggling to gain any ascendancy and fluidity in their play with many long balls from both sides being easily dealt with in defence. The game was changed mid way through the half, however, when Shane Atkinson burst from midfield to leave the Geraldton keeper stranded with a swerving drive. Balga from this point seemed content to sit deep and absorb pressure from the opposition and this allowed the La Fiamma team several golden chances to equalise. The Balga keeper though made several outstanding blocks to maintain his sides lead and the away defenders mopped up in front of him when required.

With a 1-0 scoreline at half time both sides came out of the blocks in the second half and it seemed Geraldton’s dominance would be repaid with an equaliser as they continued to create and miss chances. After 60 minutes though a defensive mix up allowed the Geraldton forward to break through and slot in the equalising goal. With this the home crowd sensed that their side could grab another and urged them on. Reacting to this the Geraldton players started to win the 50/50 balls more often and able to get some dangerous crosses into the Balga box. From once such raid Geraldton surged into the area and as the full back attempted to cross the ball, managed to find the net as the Balga keeper fumbled the ball into the net. 2-1 now and a little over 15 minutes to play.

At this stage the Geraldton players began to tire as usually occurs in these pre-season games. Balga increased their own tempo abd now it was their turn to push forward and force errors from opposition players. A reshaped midfield began to dominate the exchanges and Tiago up front was causing problems for the La Fiamma defence. With 10 minutes to go he chased a long ball over the top and sweetly volleyed a ball past the keeper and into the top corner. Great finish from the new lad with his left foot from the edge of the area.

Both sides were now battling for the winner in the dying stages and Balga brought on Chris Redman up front to replace tiring legs and hopefully bag a winner. Again it was another long ball that he chased down and as he tried to nudge the ball past the oncoming keeper the ball spilled to Anthony Banham who managed to keep his cool and squeeze the ball into the back of the net for a 3-2 scoreline. In the final few moments again Geraldton pushed forward but couldn’t break down a packed defence and the visitors held on for the win.

STARLIGHT FOUNDATION SHIELD

The Balga first team recorded a 3-3 draw in our annual pre-season charity game against Ballajura on the weekend. Ballajura were 3-1 up but Balga fought back to level close to full time and probably should have won with better finishing. The Reserves also played well, and were 2-0 in front, however Ballajura came back to draw the game 2-2.

Our Women's team also drew 2-2 in a pulsating game of football which went from end to end, both sides having chances to win. Ballajura dominated and were 1-0 up for a long period before two quick goals gave Balga the lead going into the dying minutes but a superb equaliser from Ballajura salvaged a draw.

Our Masters team were too good for South Perth United, ending up 1-0 winners.

2005 JUNIOR INFORMATION

This season there are changes happening, Balga Soccer Club have joined with The Western Australian Soccer Association which we believe is the best thing for Soccer in Australia. For the following season there are only a few changes which will involve our teams.

BALGA RELEGATED

Balga have been relegated to the WAASSA Second Division following our loss to top of the table Lynwood Colts. Lynwood had only lost one game all year, but Balga put in a strong effort. We were leading 1-0 for most of the game, but Balga gave away two quick goals mid-way through the 2nd half to lose 2-1. Even though it was disappointing to go down on goal difference, we can only get stronger next year. The Reserves lost 7-1.

BALGA SC - NEWS FOR 2004

The Balga Soccer and Social Club recently held their Annual General Meeting at the Princess road clubrooms.

One of the most important procedures of the meeting was the holding of an election for the position of President. There were two nominations for this position, firstly outgoing President Mr Ken Shorto, and secondly Standing Treasurer Mr Trevor Allen.

The vote was held within the rules of the clubs constitution, with the result being the election of Mr Trevor Allen to the position of President for the next two years.

Trevor would like to thank Mr Shorto and his family for all the work they have done for the club, especially the effort Ken has put in for the last two years as President.

There were two other important positions filled at the meeting. Firstly the position of Junior Vice President, once again Ms Sonya Shorto has accepted this position, and the Committee would like to congratulate and thank her for the tireless effort she always puts in.

Secondly, as Mr Allen was voted in as President, the Treasurers position became vacant.

Mrs Kim Herrington was nominated and elected to fill this position. The committee would like to also congratulate her and offer her their full support for the next two years.

There were also three additions to the new committee, Mr Paul Cunningham , Mr John Herrington and Mr Gordon Rodgers and we would like to welcome them to the Balga Soccer and Social Club management Committee.

We would also like to thank Mrs Donna Madison and Mrs Judith Johnson for their offer of running the canteen during the Soccer season.

The club also announced this week that Mr John Cobbett has been appointed their senior coach for the next three years. Mr Cobbett has had over 18 years coaching experience spending time at clubs like Morley Windmills, South Perth United and Shamrock Rovers. Balga Soccer Club President Mr Trevor Allen said that John’s appointment is yet another positive move forward in an ever developing club.

LADIES WIN GRAND FINAL!

The Womens team won the Third Division Grand Final on Sunday, with a dramatic penalty shootout against fourth placed Ashfield Swans. With Ashfield defeating league winner Bassendean Caledonian in the semi-finals last week, it was never going to be easy. But their determination paid off, with a fine 3-0 win on penalties. Congratulations, you've done the Balga Soccer Club proud!

22/9/2003

A TOUGH SEASON

Balga completed their 2003 season on Sunday, after a 5-2 loss to Spearwood Dalmatinac. Even though we didn't win a game this season, the boys can hold their heads up high for the spirit and endeavor shown. Considering the number of players we lost at the end of last season and our late entry back into the Premier League, our season was never expected to be the best. So it's back into the First Division next season for the first time in 3 years, with a new coach to be appointed over the summer and to be in a league that should suit as more, there is lots to look forward too!

BALGA JUNIOR SOCCER CLUB NEWSLETTER AUGUST

With the season drawing to a close it is time to organise the year end celebrations.

Firstly congratulations to both the 12 and 13 year olds for ending the season in 1st or second spot depending on last few games. Good luck in the finals to you all, details of when and where will be posted later in Clubrooms and on website.

As most of you know, we tell you often, this is one of the cheapest soccer clubs in Perth to play with. This means if we are to improve we rely on donations through sponsorship or from self help projects. This year we have delivered phone books and also we had a group of parents helping to clean up the gardens at Westminster Shops. It is vital that we continue these projects to enable us to improve.

EARLY IN SEPTEMBER WE WILL BE DELIVERING THE WHITE PAGES PHONE BOOKS AND WE NEED YOUR HELP. WITH ENOUGH SUPPORT WE CAN DO THIS ON ONE SATURDAY. We will need vehicles and runners with one driver and three runners per vehicle. Vehicles can be Utes, vans, small trucks or trailers.

The Club will be taking those players who wish to go to Q-zar in Fremantle on Sunday morning 31st August using the vouchers supplied through the year. The cost per player will be $6 per person for two games Q-zar and a bowling game plus cost of transport. Please give your name to your coach by Sunday 16th August if you wish to go. Some parents/coaches are required to go also, and can also play for $6 each.

TROPHY DAY will be Sunday 14th September commencing at 10 am with the Parents verses juniors (U12's & U13's) game. Those adults/players interested in playing see Sonya. This will be followed by trophy presentations and sausage sizzle and entertainment whilst the senior teams play here at Brian Burke reserve. On this day we will be having a General meeting, to seek new members for the committee.

Later in the year the ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FAIR WILL BE HELD HERE AT Balga soccer club grounds on Saturday 13th December from 3pm.

BALGA OPTS FOR NEW COACHING STAFF

Thursday night (7th August) saw Balga and coach George Papaliaris part company after the committee decided to finish the year by installing a team of three to see out the year. Glyn James, Darren McNally and Ken Shorto will oversee the team preparations and team selection with a view of ensuring that all players will want to return next year and return to the Premier league as soon as possible. The Club wants to say that George has not been responsible for the poor results this year as our squad is too small with quality to have done much better without injuries that we sustained. We are now in the process of searching for a long term replacement to take over the reigns of the Club.

25/7/2003

WELCOME TO THE WORLD, RYAN!

Sonya and Anthony are proud to announce the arrival of their new son, Ryan, at 11:30pm on Thursday 24th July weighing in at 7lb 11 oz all are happy at this time. The club wishes Sonya, Anthony and Ryan all the best!

9/7/2003

MID-SEASON REPORT

When we appointed George, as coach, in January after we were relegated last season and had lost nine of our first team squad, it was the general consensus that it would take two or three years for us to good enough to challenge for promotion again to the Premier league.

When we were offered the chance to return to the top division with 6 days notice we took the opportunity knowing that we did not have enough experienced players available, but with a number of young players willing to try.

With half the season gone it has proved correct, however we believe that with the great team spirit which still exists and the continuing improvement of the players we will see an improved second half of the season. The loss of Anthony Banham, after two games, broken leg, Nathaniel Baxter, after two games, Knee ligaments, and goalkeeper Steve Skordas, after seven games, Knee damage has proved very difficult to cover with such a small squad. The good news is that Anthony has been back training for two weeks now and is hopeful of returning to the playing pitch soon, also Matt Brown has rejoined the first team after recovering his fitness through the first half of the season. We look forward to the return of Nathaniel and Steve to the training track although progress is not fast at present. We trust the second half of the season brings the rewards the efforts of players and coaches deserve and the future will be good again.

Congratulations to both the Women's and Masters teams who are having solid years as well as all junior teams who are improving each week.

See you at the games.

Ken Shorto
President

BALGA BACK IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

Balga have today accepted the challenge to compete in the WAASSA Premier league for the 2003 season as ECU Joondalup have dropped out. This means that we all must raise our efforts again to show we should not have gone down last year. To date every player has been training to their utmost capacity and this spirit will get us through the season.

We are in need of a first team manager and would welcome any volunteers for the position.

BALGA WIN THREE FROM FOUR AT BALLAJURA

The season has started on a positive note with Balga winning the Starlight annual trophy three games to one against Ballajura. The ladies team lost to a top side by 3-1 and this after clinching third spot in the second division night series on Friday night 1-0, well done all the girls.

The masters had a comfortable win against a depleted side by 5-1 after conceding the first goal, good all round effort, while the reserves came home winners by 3-1 again after trailing early. Goals were scored by Dave Gordon, Hein Tran and Goce Blaseski, well done to all players on a good start to the year.

Following the other examples, the first team also fell behind in the first half but two unanswered goals from Darren McNally sealed a very good and deserved win for us. A great effort from all, especially the lads who played some of both games.

CHARITY GAME

The annual charity game for the Starlight Foundation will be played this Sunday 23rd March away to Ballajura. Everyone is welcome to come and watch our new team play. Kick off is at 1pm and 3pm, our First Team, Reserves, Masters and Womens team will be all in action with 2 games being played at the same time.

There has also been a change for the first few fixtures for the start of the season. Our First Team and the Reserves will now be playing away to Colo Colo on Sunday 6th April. The Masters team start the season with an away game against the Perth Saints.

LADIES MAKE THE SEMI'S

The womens team are making the club proud by progressing to the semi-finals in Division B of the Bobby 10 Night Series. The Balga Ladies started their campaign on 21st February in great form, with a 2-1 win over the Ashfield Swans. Next up on the 28th February was the local derby against the Sorrento Stingers, which ended in a 0-0 draw. A win against East Fremantle Red in their last group game on the 7th March would guarantee passage to the Semi-Finals, and that is exactly what happened with a fine 3-0 victory to the green and blacks.

Group UC2 P W D L FOR AGST GD PTS
Balga 3 2 1 0 5 1 +4 7
Ashfield Swans 3 2 0 1 6 3 +3 6
East Fremantle Red 3 1 0 2 2 5 -3 3
Sorrento Stingers 3 0 1 2 0 4 -4 1

Balga then went on to meet Group UC1 winners, East Fremantle Green, in the semi-finals. The game was played on Friday 14th March at George Burnett Park and we were unlucky to go down 3-1 on penalties. However it was a great effort by our team to get so far, well done!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU

With the arrival of 2003 we can look forward to a new season of soccer and a new challenge for the Balga Soccer Club.
As we are all aware, 2002 was not a good season for the Club, however with a new committee and new coach we invite you to return to the training track for a better season.
The new committee is full of soccer players and it is our aim to improve the playing conditions of all players young and old. We have already had two committee meetings and will be meeting with at least three applicants for the senior coaching position in the next two weeks.

To open the new year we invite all players and families to a BBQ at the Club on Sunday 19th January from 4:30pm on to hear of our plans for our return to the Premier Division as soon as possible. It of course will be important for us to increase the size of our playing staff and you are welcome to bring along any interested players to meet us on this day.

We look forward to meeting up with as many of you as possible on the 19th but if you cannot be there please give me a call and I will let you know of the details for training .

Yours in sport

Ken Shorto

2002 Season - President's Message

DOWN BUT NOT OUT, WE WILL RETURN STRONGER

The season 2002 is finished for the Premier League team and I would like to thank all those people that worked so hard to make this year the best it could be.

To Danny Stevens my special thanks for all the work that went unseen and for your continued efforts right to the last minute of the last game.
To both team managers Pete Duggan and Kirk Murfett many thanks also for a great job in assisting the coaches.

To many of the players thanks also for the effort put in by you during the year, if all players gave the same as the dedicated ones we would have been top half of the league. There was plenty of excuses we could make for this year but we believe that it is time to forget about outside influences and start to make our own destiny be what we want it to be.

In the next two weeks you will see that we will be advertising in the Glory Program and on TV (Channel 31 British Soccer show) for the Coaching positions for next year. Danny is keen to continue coaching and he likes the Club we are building but we must look at all possibilities before we map our course.

Don't forget we have one more game to play this year, The Vets Cup Final Sunday Oct. 6th. At Inglewood , National Stadium, 10 AM kick off.

The season off the park has been fantastic and to all the helpers throughout the year many many thanks for once there have been too many to mention individually but you all know who you are and you are all appreciated, see you on the 18th Oct. Final delivery day of the Yellow Pages is on Saturday 16th November.

See you all soon, spread the word on the Windup Dance night Sat.12th October. No entry fee for Members and guests.

Balga are out of the Mitre Cup, when the first team lost to a Fremantle United golden goal in extra time. Fremantle took the lead in the opening minutes, but Balga hit back a minute later from a Darren McNally goal hit from outside the box. Even though Balga had most of the ball, Fremantle United went 2-1 up mid-way through the first half. After the interval Fremantle looked the more likely to score, however a great header by Willy Lyall in the 82nd minute made it 2-2. Balga had most of the chances in the first period of extra time, but Fremantle United got the winner in a controversial goal, in which the ball never seemed to cross the line, however the assistant referee allowed it.

Quiz night is Saturday 24th August for all who are interested it is only $5 per person, tables of eight, you can buy tickets at the bar or on the night.

The club is involved in a big fund raiser, and would like help from the players and the parents. We have a contact for delivering phone books over four Saturdays, we need runners to deliver the books and drivers with a trailer van or station wagon to carry the books. The club is willing to pay petrol money and provide lunches on those days. There are two Saturday's in a row and a break then two again, it would be a great help even if you help for one of the Saturdays. If interested please contact Sonya 9342 7656 or Ken 9342 6824. This would put us in good shape for next season.
