* NOTE: To remain consistent, we haved called all the previous names for each league to what they would be known as today throughout the history section of this website. For instance, in the semi-professional leagues, the old State League back in 1985 would today be the equivalent of the Premier League, the Second Division in 1985 would be known today as the First Division and so on. The same for the amateur leagues, we have called the old ASA First Division the Premier Division to stay consistent with the current Football West Amateur setup.

In the Beginning

1971 - 1977

In March, 1971, local resident and keen soccer fan, Ted Hutton, surrounded himself with a small band of like minded people and began distributing handwritten leaflets throughout Balga, thereby creating the birth of the Balga Soccer Club. The response allowed the club to field four teams in junior soccer that year.

At first the club was homeless and had to play wherever a "free" ground could be found. On numerous occasions they suffered the humiliation of being ordered off for unauthorised use. This continued until repeated approaches to the City of Stirling gained the club allocation of Camberwell Road Reserve in 1973 and eventually Princess Road Reserve (now known as Brian Burke Reserve) in 1976.

With the allocation of Brian Burke Reserve, the club settled down and set about establishing itself in the area and in metropolitan junior soccer.

From the start the club's administration adopted an expansion programme with the ultimate aim of representation in every age group provided by the Junior Soccer Association.

It is a credit to them that this was achieved by 1974 and the club celebrated by figuring handsomely on trophy presentation day. This form was proved in 1975 and 1976 when the club won many junior league championships, R&I Championships and other knockout competitions.

It was the performance of Balga's junior teams in those years that brought the unwelcome attention of neighbouring, more financial clubs, and resulted in Balga losing the services of talented players who were enticed away by more lucrative offers.

Most of these players went on to play in WA's Premier League in the 1980s, and was proof of Balga's ability as a "breeding ground".

Balga's first venture into senior soccer was in 1973, when the club entered the Third Division of the Amateur Soccer Association, which would be equivalent to today's WAASSA Second Division league. The club did reasonably well, finishing in 5th position in the 9 team league, and winning 9 games. The reserves finished 3rd.

Balga was promoted to the amateur First Division for the 1974 season due to clubs in higher divisions leaving the amateurs to play in the semi-professional Soccer Federation, and what a season it was. The club ran neck and neck with Bedford United for most of the year, with Balga just pipping Bedford in the closing stages to take out the championship.

Balga was now in the Premier Division (First Division as it was then known) of the amateurs in 1975, and the club was determined to push for honours. The team challenged strongly, however faltered in the last rounds of the league season and finished 4th behind Graylands, Maccabi and Windsor Athletic, who took out the title. The reserves also did well finishing 2nd. Balga did win silver wear in 1975 when the team took out Fairchild Trophy (equivalent to today's WAASSA Mitre Cup) after beating the Spearwood Dalmatinac Amateurs 2-1 in the Final.

In 1976 the club continued to do well, this time the reserves winning the Fairchild Trophy and the first team finishing 3rd in the league. Balga also entered the D'orsogna Cup for the first time. The First Round saw Balga play Federation side Cockburn United, with Balga thrashing the semi-professional outfit by 7-1. The draw of the Second Round saw the club meet one of the top teams of WA semi-professional soccer at the time, that being Morley Windmills. The gap was evident, with Balga totally outplayed, losing 9-1.

Now that Balga had a taste of playing semi-professional opposition, they wanted more. But the club's entry into the Soccer Federation of WA had to wait, as Balga once again played in the Amateur Soccer Association's top flight in 1977 and finished in 2nd position. After the season was completed Balga applied for entry into the SFWA, and it was to much relief of club officials, supporters and players that Balga was accepted and could now go up against the best that the semi-professional leagues had to offer.

Semi-Professional Soccer

1978

At then end of the 1977 season, Balga decided it need new challenges at senior level, and entered the Third Division (then known as the Fourth Division) in the Soccer Federation of Western Australia.

This was a new division that the SFWA just commenced, and all the teams had come from the Amateur Soccer Association the previous year. Balga was one of the favourites for the title, however it wasn't to be and the club finished in a respectable 5th place in its first season as a semi-professional club.

1979

One year later success came to the club, with Balga finishing in runners up position, two points behind Wanneroo, and gaining promotion to the Second Division. The club went on to win the top four cup. The Reserves went one better in the league, by taking out the championship.

1980

In 1980 the club went from strength to strength, as it took out the Second Division championship by two points over University and gained promotion to the First Division (then known as the Second Division). Balga also went on to win the top four cup 2-0 against University. Brian Callaghan took out the Second Division Fairest and Best and K. Winstanley was the league's top goal scorer, with 18 goals.

Balga also had its best D'Orsogna Cup run in its 20 seasons of semi-professional soccer in 1980 by reaching the quarter-finals, not bad for a team that wasn't even in the top 2 divisions during that season. Balga caused the upset of the year in the Second Round when it defeated high flying East Fremantle Tricolore 2-1 at home, before losing 1-0 to North Perth Croatia in the game that decided the semi-finalist.

The Reserves also had a great season, by finishing runners up in the league.

1982

Balga's first ever programme - 3rd April, 1982

1982 was a season where the club once again failed to impress on the park and was more of relegation chance than a promotion one, however the club retained its First Division status.

Some of the players that played for the club that year, included Derek Harnwell in goal, who also played for the club between 1988 and 1991. Also in the team was Eddie Hodgkinson, who would coach the team in the early 1990s.

Balga's Under 18's team had another great year, once again finishing runners up, this time to Kelmscott.

Squad: D. Harnwell, P. Unwin, R. Tickner, M. Edwards, D. Hopkins, P. Finch, B. Callaghan, G. Gardner, P. Everitt, I. McPherson, D. Anderson, E. Hodgkinson, A. Fenton, K. Hordell, J. Burton, B. Conway, P. Andrews, R. Morgan, D. Clarkson (Coach).

1983

President's Report - 13th August, 1983

1983 was a turning point for Balga, Reg Davis become coach, and the club signed former state players Ray Ilott and Steven Sceats. Balga also got its long awaited fence to enclose the ground, it needed this to have a chance of playing in the Premier League.

After a promising start, a mid season slump ended any chance of promotion to the top flight, and the team finished in 8th position. The Under 18's impressed again, by finishing runners up in the league for the third year in a row and runners up in the D'Orsogna Cup.

1984

Club Registrar Report after our promotion to the top flight of WA soccer - 8th September, 1984

The 1984 season ended with Balga reaching its goal of promotion to the best possible league in Western Australia.

Balga battled it out with Forrestfield United for top spot on the league table throughout the second half of the season, however a loss to Forrestfield and Cockburn ended hopes of a championship, but a win against Swan Athletic with three games to go guaranteed a top two finish and promotion to the Premier League.

Brian Callaghan was great in defence once again, and won the First Division Fairest and Best award.

1985

Coach Ray Ilott's report prior to the club's first win in the top flight - 4th May, 1985

Balga's first season in the Premier League (State League as it was then known) started badly for the club, as it lost all of its five night series games and its first five league games. Most of the experts predicted Balga's certain relegation.

Reg Davis also left to coach the Perth Azzurri Reserves before the 1985 season, and this role was taken over by Ray Ilott as player coach.

Ilott continued to have faith in his players, and with the help of Scottish imports Paul Gaffney, Tony McKinlay and Gavin Tait during the season, lifted the club.

Balga needed to win its last two games of the season and have other results go its way to avoid the drop. Balga defeated East Fremantle Tricolore 3-2 and Inglewood Kiev 3-0 a week later. Kingsway Olympic lost its last two games and Balga was safe.

1986

Ray Ilott's departure makes headlines prior to the 1986 season - 30th November, 1985

Ray Ilott hoped to gain a few new signings to strengthen the squad for the 1986 season, however, he left when he learnt that this wouldn't happen, and that he was losing all three of his Scottish imports to other clubs, plus the talented Peter Andrews to Perth Azzurri.

Brian Gillespie took over as coach before the season started and with the loss of the club's star players to rival clubs, the situation seemed hopeless. But with the new signing of striker George Rimpas, Paul Gaffney's return mid-season and the determination of all the players, Balga avoided relegation and even managed to be as high as 6th spot in round 13, before finishing 8th.

The Reserves had their best cup run to date, by reaching the final before losing to Inglewood Kiev 3-2.

1987

Balga struggled for most of the season in 1987, however relegation seemed likely from day one, as the so called new Super League was about to start in 1988, which would cut the league from 12 to 8 teams. To have any chance of playing in the Super League, Balga needed to finish out of the bottom five, but this task proved too much, and the club finished 2nd from bottom and its three year stay in the Premier League was over.

The Reserves however were in totally different form, as they dominated the league and won Balga's only league honours while in the top flight.

1988

Mike McKinlay become coach in 1988, in which he saw a big turnover of players in the off-season following Balga's relegation. Many of its better players left.

Balga struggled in the new 14 team league First Division, and only with the help of other results in the last few games of the season did it manage to avoid successive relegations.

1989

Not much changed for the club in 1989, as Balga finished second last in the league, but Balga was saved from relegation only because of a league restructure by the SFWA.

1991

The main arrivals in 1991 was Mark Pottier and striker Martin Guilfoyle. Guilfoyle who had played with Spearwood Dalmatinac and Kingsway Olympic, was a proven goal scorer and helped Balga win 7 games in a row in the middle of the season as the club finished mid table in 7th position.

The Reserves had a great season. A close win over Bassendean Caledonian in the final game of the season, brought the championship to the club.

1992

1992 was the year the new break away Professional Soccer League expanded to 3 divisions, however many of the 1991 First Division teams opted to stay loyal to the Soccer Federation of Western Australia, as did Balga.

Balga had a great year, with 4 new quality signings, which included Ivica Markovic who teamed up with Martin Guilfoyle up front, Markovic scored 38 goals for the season, which was the highest in the league. The other 3 players was Steve Blackmore, who dominated the midfield, defender Steve Callaghan who joined from Kingsway Olympic and goalkeeper Liam Twigger.

Balga won 9 games in a row in the first half of the season, which included a 13-0 trouncing of Western Yugal. Other big wins that occurred in 1992 was a 9-0 thrashing of Gosnells City and a 6-0 win over Inglewood Kiev. It wasn't until the 14th league game of the season that Balga tasted its first defeat, to lowly Osborne Park Galeb. Another loss to local rival Balga West Coast and Melville Alemannia dented hopes of winning the championship. It went to the last game of the season against Ferndale United, who only needed a draw. However it was Ferndale who proved too strong, winning the game 3-1, along with the championship.

The Reserves also did well, finishing runners-up.

Squad: L. Twigger, P. Davies, Roy Brynjulfsen, S. Callaghan, E. Moala, D. Hill, G. Gunnis, S. Blackmore, Roger Brynjulfsen, D. Moala, M. Guilfoyle, I. Markovic, R. Longkeek, E. Hodgkinson (Coach).

1993

The Professional Soccer League merged with the Soccer Federation of Western Australia in 1993 which meant a new league restructure. Inglewood Kiev was promoted to the Premier League from the 1992 SFWA competition, and they hired Balga's coach Eddie Hodgkinson, in which most of the first team players followed him to play in the top flight.

Balga was allocated to play in the First Division (known as the Second Division at the time) in the new Professional Soccer Federation and the club rebuilt under new coach Don Mann. However with the 4 bottom teams going down, and with the team losing its first 7 games, the club never got out of the relegation zone.

1994

1993 repeated itself in 1994, with nearly all of the first team players following Don Mann to Stirling Vasto, in which Balga had to rebuild it's first team again.

Glyn James took over as coach, and Darren Cooper who was with the club in 1985, returned in goal. It was also Balga's first season out of the top 2 divisions in 14 years.

Balga did well to finish in 7th position considering that the club lost many of it's players for the 2nd season in a row.

1995

Peter Andrews returned to Balga in 1995, 10 years after he left, to help Balga push for honours. However even though the club improved and finished mid table in the expanded 12 team league, it never got close to a promotion place.

The Reserves had its best season in 3 years, finishing runners up behind Perth City.

1997

1997 was Balga's worst season, the club only won 4 from 28 games, didn't win a game in the second half of the season and finished 14th in the 15 team league. This was an expanded First Division after the Second Division was abolished after the 1996 season. 1997 was also the last season Balga played in the Soccer West Coast competition, after 20 seasons in semi-professional soccer, the club was relegated to the amateur leagues.

Back to the Amateur Association

1998

Balga was back in amateur soccer in 1998, and due to our special circumstances, WAASSA allowed us, along with University, who also got relegated from Soccer West Coast to play in it's First Division competition, instead of starting all the way down in the WAASSA Fourth Division.

Balga struggled, but with the return of Glyn James as coach around mid-season, the club managed to avoid relegation in the 14 team league and finished 12th.

1999

Glyn James continued as coach in 1999 and with the return of a few old players, Balga had a big improvement, the club finished 4th in the 14 team league. After winning its first 2 games of the season, Balga then only mangaged to win 1 of their next 6 league games, which all but ended hopes of promotion to the WAASSA Premier Division.

2000

Balga contiuned their good 1999 form in 2000 to finish runners up in the WAASSA First Division and earning promotion to the Premier Division.

Darren McNally become player-coach of the first team and his number one aim was promotion to the Premier Division. After losing its first game of the season, the club won its next 7 games straight to lead the table after 8 rounds. Balga then lost to teams near the foot of the table, but by round 13 they were back on top. Soon after this Balga once again lost games that they expected to win. By Round 19 Balga was in 4th position with only 3 games to go, promotion looked very unlikely, but with great wins against promotion rivals Cockburn City and league leaders Mandurah City meant Balga finished runners up and we're on their way to the WAASSA Premier Divison.

2001

Balga's first season in the WAASSA Premier Division since leaving Soccer West Coast level had its ups and downs.

Danny Stevens was the new coach and after the first 7 games, Balga had only lost twice and was sitting in 4th position on the table. However a bad run of results during the middle of the year put Balga in trouble, with the club only winning one time in its next 11 attempts. Balga then won 2 of its last 4 games to avoid relegation and to ensure another season in the WAASSA Premier Division.

2002

Balga had a difficult 2002, an inconsistent year had the club fighting against relegation throughout the whole season. Balga just finished in the drop zone by goal difference.

The club had some good wins, but the games against rock bottom Subiaco when we were leading on both occasions made sure that Balga would finish in the bottom two. However, just prior to the start of the 2003 season, the ECU Joondalup Amateurs had to drop down to the Third Division due to a shortage of players, which saved Balga's Premier Division status.

Squad: R. Longkeek, G. Shorto, G. Jones, N. Martin, P. Cunningham, K. Smith, D. Gordon, B. Gillespie, J. Jensen, A. Banham, S. Hill, M. McShane, D. McNally, G. Chambers, S. Wilson, K. Pope, W. Lyall, G. James, D. Ravapinto, D. Stevens (Coach).

2003

What can we say about the 2003 season? Well, on the pitch is was without a doubt the worst year in Balga Soccer Club's history. For the first time ever our senior side finished bottom of the table, and we went through the season without winning a single game. Our only point was away to Kwinana United on the 27th April.

Prior to the season, senior coach Danny Stevens left to coach the new amateur Inglewood United team, many of our players left to follow him. It was case of history repeating itself, as 10 years earlier coach Eddie Hodgkinson also left the club to join Inglewood with most players also joining him.

George Papaliaris was signed as coach for 2003 and Balga was all fired up for their new season in the First Division. However, just days prior to the first round, ECU Joondalup Amateurs quit the Premier League. As Balga finished 2nd last in that league last season we were asked to replace them. After much debate we decided to do so. We knew it wouldn't be easy, with so many players leaving during the off-season, but our young players did their best. We can only look forward to next season to get back where we belong.
